The annual Communitas Summer Celebrations took place in August in the Fraser Valley and on Vancouver Island. These events are eagerly anticipated – and it’s easy to see why!

 Miracle Beach Memories

On Vancouver Island, people served by Communitas, staff, and families gather at Miracle Beach to enjoy the sunshine, the amazing beach views, and great company. 

For years, Cathy Corbett from Magical Faces has created works of art on people’s faces and this year was no different: both staff and people served waited patiently to have her create artwork on their faces. Cathy’s daughter Sarah’s fun balloon creations were also a hit.

“Last year, I got a humming bird on my arm, so I asked for another one,” said Gail, showing off her new art work and balloon creation.  

The photo booth gave participants an opportunity to celebrate the organization’s annual theme of Kindness Connects by creating their own messages of kindness and holding signs with a kindness theme.

Carnival games were enjoyed on a large scale – literally – with giant Jenga, Tic-Tac-Toe, and Connect Four taking centre stage.

People enjoyed a delicious BBQed farmer sausage burgers, salads, and a cake adorned with the Communitas logo. The afternoon was capped off with the traditional group photo.

“We always look forward to this event,” said Sheila, a program director with Communitas. “It’s just so nice to have a chance to bring the people we serve to such a beautiful place.”

Mill Lake Magic

In Abbotsford, the BBQ returned to Mill Lake Park, where a record-breaking 300 people gathered for the annual event.

People enjoyed the great music provided by the Crystal Hicks band, who have played at this event for years. People were captivated by Andrew, whose magic tricks entertained and mystified them.

“I watched him do several card and coin tricks and I just cannot believe what he does,” said communications manager, Angelika. “It truly is magic.”

Classic lawn games, bingo, face-painting and balloons kept everyone entertained while they waited for the great meal provided by Klassic Catering.

Alex manages a Communitas home living option in Abbotsford. Everyone from the home enjoyed the music and the meal, noting that if they weren’t eating, they were dancing. Koran is new to Communitas and this was his first BBQ.

“Koran was so happy to see people he knew and being around ‘all the love’,” Alex said.

Hardeep also manages a home living option in Abbotsford and felt that the event was a true Communitas experience.

“The BBQ was a wonderful community gathering that truly reflected our vision statement of creating inclusive community and abundant life for all,” Hardeep said.

Creating Community

CEO Matt Dirks says that the annual events are always a highlight. He appreciates the way these events bring people together to celebrate community. While each event has its own unique atmosphere, both celebrations are an opportunity for people to gather and make connections.

“What better way to experience community than getting people together and sharing food, fun, and enjoying each other’s company,” Matt says. “I’m thankful for all the volunteers and staff who work to ensure these events happen and to each and every person that came out!”
