The Centennial Place Employment program provides support as well as experience building opportunities for members working towards their individual employment goals. The employment program is one of many programs offered at Centennial Place, which is a clubhouse that provides opportunities for relationships, leisure, wellness support and vocational training. Clubhouse members are referred to Centennial Place by their local mental health centre or a family physician.

Larry Meredith began working towards employment at Centennial Place in June 2016. He came with specific goals: a desire to be independent and to move out on his own.

“Work is necessary to do both of these things,” he explains.

Through the Centennial Place Employment program, Larry received support in updating his resume. He also gained work experience through CommCrew, a landscape and gardening program operated by Communitas Supportive Care Society.

“Through CommCrew, I’ve done grounds keeping at and around the Mission Mental Health building,” Larry says. “My job duties include: pruning, lawn care, weeding, picking up garbage in the general area, sweeping and whatever other little jobs are needed. I work two hours a week.”
Robert Jeffery, who is the manager at Centennial Place, says the goal of the program is to support clubhouse members to be the best employees they can be in future work opportunities and the support is tailored to the individual.

“The way in which this process plays out will look different for each person,” he explains. “This program allows members to take positive steps towards their individually identified life goals.”

Larry appreciates the flexibility that he’s received from staff who have worked with his schedule and provided assistance when needed. He also valued the additional suggestions and ideas staff have provided.

“Their support was really timely and related to my needs and interests,” he says. “I look forward to continuing with the process of Employment and seeing what future opportunities there are for the future.
