Communitas supports people living with disabilities on north Vancouver Island as well as the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. In Campbell River and Courtenay, Communitas facilitates home living options, shared living arrangements, and community inclusion services. The second annual Taste and Tour was an opportunity to enjoy great food and drink from local vendors and engage with the work of Communitas; hearing stories, meeting staff, and offering input.

Matt Dirks is the chief executive officer for Communitas. He was pleased with the response from the community.

“This year we had more people who connected with us who were new to the work of Communitas and that’s why we do these events,” Matt said.

Olha Buhai and Jessie Fefchak organized the event. There was a strong commitment to support local businesses. Food and drink was provided by More Eatery, The Sourdough Whisperer, 40 Knots Winery, and Beach Fire Brewing Company. The Sourdough Whisperer and 40 Knots Winery also contributed door prizes as did The UPS store, FYI Doctors, Dave’s Bakery, and Campbell River Museum.

More Eatery catered the event

As guests sampled the delicious charcuterie and drinks, they had the chance to tour the Brandon Centre – Communitas’ regional office for North Vancouver Island – and engage with staff who were there to talk about their work and answer questions. Olha said the biggest highlight for her was to see how staff, community partners, guests, and board members were coming together, some for the first time.

“There was so much light, curiosity, and mutual desire to learn and support each other,” Olha said. “I believe events like this make community stronger, allowing us to build connections and partnerships, and enjoy it all in a welcoming and engaging atmosphere.”
