Job Club in June
Finding a job can be a challenge so it’s important to find places of encouragement and support. When you live with a developmental disability, that encouragement is even more important. That’s why Communitas Employment made the decision to start a Job Club. This club will be specifically for those who live with developmental disabilities and are either actively looking for work or are newly employed.
The Job Club is a one hour meeting where people can come and get tips on finding meaningful work, how to be successful on the job and more.
“We’re planning on bringing in guest speakers and we also have an excellent video series that we’ll watch together and then discuss,” says Paul McCracken, employment specialist.
The Job Club to be held on June 26th will feature guest speaker Sean Dyck, owner of the Tim Hortons on Whatcom Road. He will share interview skills from an employer’s perspective.
Paul McCracken and his colleague Tamara Seebaran want to create an environment where those who are already working and those who are in the midst of their job search can share stories and learn from each other.
“It will be an opportunity to share what they’ve learned and to speak into each other’s lives.” Paul McCracken, employment specialist.
The Job Club will be held at the Communitas Social Enterprise (CSE) offices (#102-33445 Maclure Road), which also houses two CSE enterprises: ShredMasters and Valley Recycling. For those who cannot get to that location by bus or on their own, rides will be arranged from the Communitas office on Bourquin Crescent West.
“We really want people to participate and make it as easy as possible for them to get there,” McCracken says, adding the decision to hold the meetings at the CSE location is very intentional. “Having the meetings there also allows participants to see a workplace in action.”
