Fundraising Walk Creates Awareness
For several years in a row, Communitas Supportive Care Society and the Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association have teamed up to host a fundraising walk to raise awareness about brain injuries and the people who live with them. This year’s event takes place on June 16th at Mill Lake in Abbotsford.
While raising funds is one part of the event, raising awareness is just as important to Dave, who visits the bi-weekly Communitas Drop-In in Abbotsford. Dave has lived with an acquired brain injury (ABI) since 2009 and says that most people in the general public don’t understand the challenges that he and others living with ABI face.
“When we say ‘we’re tired’ we are mentally exhausted and the body then becomes exhausted too,” he says. “Everything is compounded by our brain injury, we run out of energy fast.”
Still, Dave is grateful for the fact that he can still live a full life and he really appreciates the Drop-In.
Coming here makes you realize that you’re not alone. There is great camaraderie here. – Dave, Brain Injury Drop-In participant
This year, funds raised by Communitas participants will benefit the organization’s two Drop-In programs in Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Amanda Lind, the manager of the Abbotsford Brain Injury Drop In, says the funds raised at the walk help cover costs for extras like outings, pizza parties and other activities. Last year’s event raised $1600 and their goal this year is to exceed that amount. Amanda is proud of the way that members like Dave have embraced this opportunity to bring attention to the challenges with which they are faced.
“For some of our members, doing this walk is a significant challenge because of the physical limitations that they live with,” she says. “But they are determined to do this because they know they can help erase the stigma around brain injury.”
The event is also a chance to highlight the support that Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association provides to people living with brain injury. The 2018 Brain Injury Awareness Walk takes place Saturday, June 16th at Mill Lake in Abbotsford, starting at 2:30 pm. If you would like to participate, please RSVP to Amanda at alind@CommunitasCare.com by Monday, June 11th.
